Djouce Woods – 3rd March 2024

We are holding a ‘Come and Try it’ event in Djouce Woods this coming Sunday 3rd March. We will be using the middle car park for assembly and not the normal main car park. Courses are as follows.

Short -2.1k with 50 Meters of climb. 10 controls with taped routes.
Technical short-2.6km with 50 meters of climb. 10 controls.
Medium-4.1km with 200 meters of climb and 13 controls.
Long-6.5km with 350 meters of climb. 19 controls.

Club Champs and AGM

The Setanta Club Champs will take place at Cronykeery, near Ashford, at 2pm on 21st October. This will be followed by the AGM, which is scheduled for 4pm in Ashford House, Ashford, County Wicklow. Claire Walsh RIP

Sad news of the passing of club member Claire Walsh last Friday after a long illness. Our thoughts are with her family and many friends.
Claire joined us from Three Rock many years ago and was our club champion back in 2013. Her true achievements though were in athletics were she was a multiple Irish Champion and record holder. She represented Ireland at the Olympics in 1972 and at the European Championships the year before became the first Irish female athlete to qualify for a major championship final. Vartry Reservoir – Dublin By Night 21st Jan 2023

Entries are open for the third ‘Dublin By Night’ event to be held at Vartry Reservoir on Saturday 21st January. You can enter through the Orienteering Ireland website at https://www.orienteering.ie/fixtures/vartry-reservoir-2  Entries are open until 23:00 on 20/1/2023.

There are two courses available –

Long – 4.8km long; 18 controls

Short – 3.4km long; 11 controls

The climb is very small on both courses. SIAC will not be enabled. Control descriptions are printed on the map with loose descriptions available at the start. Map scale is 1:7,500 with 5m contour interval.

Christmas Club Walk – 28th Dec

Hi All,

The annual Setanta Christmas walk is scheduled for this day week, Wednesday 28th December.

The location this year is South Wicklow, meeting in Tinahely town centre, where a coach will bring walkers to the start point, in Aughrim.

The walk will cater for people of reasonable fitness – please make sure you have adequate footwear and clothing for the cold, wet, and muddy conditions that will be encountered. Having said all that, the terrain is fairly gentle, woodland tracks and low hills

Wine and Chocolate O – Saturday 10th Dec

Hi
Just a quick reminder to all club members that our annual ‘wine and chocolate’ orienteering event takes place this coming Saturday at Glen of the Downs Woods. Parking is in the main forest car park which can only be accessed between junctions 9 and 10 from the south direction lanes of the NII dual carriageway.

Cushbawn Leinster League 16/10/2022

Setanta Orienteers are hosting a Leinster League event this coming Sunday 16th October 2022.

This area is mixed planted forestry with mainly good runnability and moderate rock detail.

The courses are as follows–

Red         4.2km 110m    13   Easy, Adult Beginners/Older Novice Juniors

Brown       7.4km 300m    20   Hard, Experienced only

The map has recently been updated by Pat Healy. The map scale is 1:10,000 with a 5.0m contour interval. The maps will be printed on waterproof paper with control descriptions printed on the map. There will also be loose control descriptions available in the start box.
SportIdent timing system will be used and SI cards can be rented for €2 (€40 replacement cost if lost). SIAC will not be enabled.

Important note: There is felling in the forest that only commenced last week. This felling activity is/could be ongoing. We will try to get it mapped, but there may be a map correction. This will be manually marked on the map and be highlighted in the start box. Please also stay away from newly stacked piles of timber.

Start times are between 11:00 and 13:00 with courses closing at 15:00. Cost is
Adults: €8 / person
Student: €5 / student
Unwaged: €5 / person
OAP: €5 / person
Family €20 / two adults plus 5 children max.

There will be a limited number of entry on the day for all courses subject to availability.
A surcharge of €2 per entry will be made on such entries.

The grid reference is T 1542 8413, Latitude 52.8959131 and Longitude -6.2850867. Parking is about 1km into the forest and will be along a forest road.
