Vartry Reservoir – Dublin By Night 21st Jan 2023
Entries are open for the third ‘Dublin By Night’ event to be held at Vartry Reservoir on Saturday 21st January. You can enter through the Orienteering Ireland website at https://www.orienteering.ie/fixtures/vartry-reservoir-2 Entries are open until 23:00 on 20/1/2023.
There are two courses available –
Long – 4.8km long; 18 controls
Short – 3.4km long; 11 controls
The climb is very small on both courses. SIAC will not be enabled. Control descriptions are printed on the map with loose descriptions available at the start. Map scale is 1:7,500 with 5m contour interval.
Parking is at the Vartry Lakes car park which is 2km north of Roundwood village on the R755. Start times are between 18:00 and 19:00. Courses close 20:30. There will be refreshment at the finish.
The map has two distinct areas. The northern part of the map is Mullinaveigue Wood. This is a small commercial plantation with mixed runnability. It has a network of roads, paths and earthbanks. Recent thinning has left brashings in places. Please note that the thinning is represented by the ‘forest runnable in one direction’ symbol. Where extraction rides run counter to this, they have been mapped as rides. The southern part of the map is a small area of parkland and wood around the Upper Dam of Vartry Reservoirs. The two area are linked by a footpath between the road and the reservoir. This must be used, with the public road being out of bounds for the competition.
