A chance to run where only legendary orienteering dinosaurs have roamed before (with apologies to all the fun-loving legendary orienteering dinosaurs out there who have been to Ballyward previously).
Ballyward, last mapped in 1972, is the location for the sixth Leinster League event this year. For those of you who may not have been there before, and that might be a few of you, Ballyward is a medium sized very runnable wood with a great mix of linear and point features, and without one single bramble. It’s one not to be missed.
Course details are;-
Brown 6.7km 150m climb
Blue 5.7km 135m climb
Green 4.7km 110m climb
Light Green 4.0km 90m climb
Red 4.5km 90m climb
Orange 2.9km 75m climb
Yellow 2.1km 50m climb
The map has been updated for the event by Pat Healy. Coillte have already started to fell a small part of the forest and this has been mapped in purple as a dangerous area. Only the forest road through this section should be used. Get there before they fell any more!
Maps will be printed on waterproof paper, are A4 in size with 1:10,000 scale and 5m contour interval. Start time between 11:00am and 1:00pm with courses closing at 3:00pm.
Sportident timing will be used. For those without an SI card, the cost of hiring a card is €2 with a charge of €40 if it is lost by the competitor (so don’t lose it).
Cost of entry is as follows;-
IOA club members: Senior €8, Junior/Student/OAP/Unwaged €5, Family (two seniors max.) €20
Non IOA club members: Senior €10, Junior/Student/OAP/Unwaged €7, Family (two seniors max.) €25
[Non IOA member surcharge allows, for insurance purposes, that the competitor is a member of the IOA for the duration of the event]
The event is at grid ref O 041 147 and will be signposted from Manor Kilbride.
Important note: Parking will be along the forest roads. The laneway into the forest is over 400m long and is a single track. Therefore, all cars must be in the forest on or before 12:30pm. No car can leave the wood until after 12:30pm. Please obey the parking officials. Your co-operation with this necessary arrangement is greatly appreciated.
Looking forward to it.
